Volume ID is a tool for replacing your hard drive ID after a format.

To use:

Record your current VID before you format by typing:

dir /p at a command prompt. Your ID will be the second line down in a
format like 2342-12WE. It will be called volume serial number or similiar
jargon.

Write it down on a piece of paper. After the format once you have XP
running again run Volume ID to rename your hard drive's ID to it's original
ID. Reboot.

Interestingly enough, you use C: if you want to rename the VID of C: rather
then 0 which is more common in other hard drive command line programs.

If you have no idea why you may want to use your original ID then please
do NOT use this utility.
